The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Norad invites you to join us for a special presentation on “Halving premature deaths” by Sir Richard Peto. Peto has made ground-breaking studies on tobacco and cancer. He adopted a global approach to epidemiology, extending his research on smoking to other world regions, and in particular to India and China. Peto has estimated that in the 20th century worldwide more than 100 million people died prematurely from smoking and that the high prevalence of smoking in populous Asian countries will ultimately cause a much higher death toll in the 21st century.

Sir Richard Peto FRS (Fellow of the Royal Society of London) is a professor of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology at the University of Oxford. In 1975, he set up the Clinical Trial Service Unit (CTSU) in Oxford, of which he and Rory Collins are now co-directors. Professor Peto's work has included studies of the causes of cancer in general, and of the effects of smoking in particular and the establishment of large-scale randomised trials of the treatment of heart disease, stroke, cancer and a variety of other diseases. He has been instrumental in introducing combined 'meta-analyses' of results from related trials that achieve uniquely reliable assessment of treatment effects. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1989, and was knighted (for services to epidemiology and to cancer prevention) in 1999.
