Rethinking Development Evaluation in light of the Sustainable Development Goals

Evaluation of development cooperation initiatives has traditionally been dominated by a development aid perspective as well as by perspectives and approaches defined by donors and actors in the Global North.

The 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development calls for broader understandings and perspectives on the notions of development - embedded in its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A key goal in this respect is SDG 17, which calls for a strengthening of global partnerships as a fundamental requirement for achieving the ambitious targets of the Agenda 2030.

This breakfast seminar aims to engage in joint reflections on current evaluation practices in the light of Agenda 2030 and SDG 17. The seminar will reflect on issues such as:

new ways of partnerships between donor and recipient countries with respect to evaluating the effects of development cooperation initiatives
needs for evaluation capacity and ways of developing such capacity
potential relationships between developing evaluation capacity and statistical capacity related to measuring progress towards the SDGs

These and other related topics will be explored from different perspectives, including from partner countries, researchers, and donors.
