25 organisations granted funds for women’s rights

Norad has finalized the assessment of applications addressing efforts concerning women’s rights for civil society organisations.

Norad's Civil Society Department announced a call for proposals for efforts supporting two grant scheme allocations in September 2017. The allocations addressed efforts supporting the follow up of UNSCR 1325, Women, Peace and Security, and Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Grant Scheme.

In total, Norad received more than 800 applications. It has been a comprehensive process screening and assessing the applications.

Norad has entered into agreements with 10 organisations supporting the follow-up of UNSCR 1325 and 15 projects addressing the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Grant Scheme.

Norad have prioritized applications according to target country, relevance, quality of the project and how accurately the applications have managed to address the goals in Norwegian Policy documents such as the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security and the Action Plan for Women’s Rights and Gender Equality in Foreign Development Policy 2016-2020.

On 11 January 2019 the Government of Norway launched a new The National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security and the Action Plan for Women’s Rights for the period of 2019-2022, pursuing the goals of the previous action plan covering the period of 2015-2018.

- There will be no peace without women. The aim of the agreements is to strengthen women's influence in peace processes and post-conflict situations, emphasizes Wenche Fone, director of the Civil Society Department.

Concentration

The agreements are entered into for three to four years. Both national and international civil society organisations are granted funding.

The allocation on the follow-up of UNSCR 1325- Women, Peace and Security are concentrated to the area of 1) peace processes and peace negotiations and 2) post-conflict support. Only projects targeting Norway’s prioritized UNSCR 1325 countries were considered.

Due to sharp competition, our portfolio supports efforts in the following countries and areas: Colombia, Mali, Myanmar, Nigeria, Philippines, South Sudan and Middle East and North Africa (with special emphasis on Syria and Palestine).

The allocation on women’s rights and gender equality are concentrated to four of the five goals in the national action plan on the topic, from 1) Women’s political rights and empowerment, 2) Women’s economic rights and empowerment, 3) A life free of violence and harmful practices and 4) Sexual and reproductive health and rights.

For this grant scheme allocation Norad strived to support locally-based organisations. Geographically, projects implemented in countries featuring on the list over countries Norway supports in development cooperation, have been prioritized.
