FSLA contributes to revision of Brazilian National REDD+ Strategy

The degree and intensity to align interests with the Federal Government was impressive. In less than six months, the project achieved the following:
  • Invited to be one of the four organizations to revise the Brazilian National REDD+ Strategy, and was able to provided LNAE-related inputs into it.
  • Hired by the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs (SAE) of the Brazilian Presidency to offer technical support for the development and estimate of the potential economic impact of a potential new major credit line for cattle ranching ("Intensifica Pecuária").
  • Invited by the Ministry of Environment to contribute in the development of a National Policy for the Restoration of Native Vegetation.

These three achievements are components of Outcome 2 and have provided significant expansions in the engagement with National REDD+ strategy coordinators.

The reference units are implemented and are being monitored. The assessment results from February until December 2013 show an increase in stocking from 1.22, the regional average, to 3.22 AU/ha (AU = Animal Unit = 450kg) in the GAP ranches. Another result is in productivity that goes from 4.70 in the region to 10.50 @/ha in the GAP ranches.

In September 2013 we carried out the first technical slaughter with animals from the GAP ranches in the JBS unit in Colíder. There were 40 animals and in carcass evaluation 23 of them were considered very good / excellent. This evaluation shows us that we are in the right way and that we need just some adjustments in cattle supplementation to achieve our goal of 90% of very good / excellent.

In the environmental questions we mapped the ten farms, built fences at the permanent preservation areas and legal reserves, and started recovery in the areas where there was a need. We tested successfully one technique that can be used in small and also in big areas, because it can be done manually and / or by tractor.

In social questions we started to train the ranches employs in GAP. With the ranchers we made exchange knowledge visits in Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul in ranches.
