Matching education, skills and work

Uganda is focusing on skills and education through the strategy “Skilling Uganda”. The NORHED projects focuses on vocation teacher training.

Project title: Master in Vocational Pedagogy

Background

There is a great need to develop the quality of vocational education in Uganda. Several reports, studies and statements of authorities in Uganda emphasize that vocational education ought to become a priority of the country both for the developmental process at the local vocational schools and in the field of practice.

Good education requires competent teachers with knowledge in their disciplines and pedagogical competency. Reports from UNEVOC’s Shanghai consensus (2012), call attention to the importance of strengthening teacher education in Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) and emphasize the need to train vocational teachers are bachelor, master and PhD levels.

The project

The project intends to develop a sustainable master in vocational pedagogy that will lead to a qualitatively good vocational training in Uganda. The project is based on a previous master programme, and will be further developed to be more action oriented with a strong connection and cooperation with the industry/private sector.

The project will include local, small scale businesses in Kampala to ensure the master students will learn how to communicate with the businesses they aim at providing skilled labour for. The students all have previous experience in the field of vocational education, and will return to their positions when they have completed their degree.

Overall goal

To increase the chances for sustainable livelihoods for youth and adults and a reduced gap between VET and the labour market.
