NIBR Report:
Natural Hazards and Prevention
Drawing on the international experiences from disaster reduction in developing countries.

Recent natural disasters like the tsunami in the Indian Ocean and the earthquake in Iran in 2004 have reminded us all of the huge impacts these kinds of events can have. Particularly the impacts are severe among the most vulnerable groups in developing countries.

The present report was developed by NIBR on behalf of NORAD. It offers insight into the connections between natural hazards and disaster and into key concepts of disaster reduction. It also offers insight into the current trends within disaster management thinking and presents some of the lessons learned through four different case studies. Finally it suggests some measures for integrating disaster reduction into the Norwegian development cooperation agenda.

The report is recommended reading for anyone engaged in development cooperation and prevention of humanitarian crisis.
