The Project

The Biz Generation Programme (PGB) began in 1999 with the objective to provide adolescents and youth with sexual and reproductive health information, preventive services against HIV/AID, sexually transmitted infections and specialised services in the case of HIV infection. Over the last five years the programme has expanded and now includes 10 of the 11 provinces in Mozambique. The programme is implemented through a multi-sector approach including the Ministries of Health, Education and Youth and Sports.

Interesting Findings

• The PGB programme is one of the most successful social programmes in Mozambique during the last decades.
• The programme has constantly expanded its coverage to reach more adolescents and youth, and is accepted and trusted by the young population.
• The school-based component of the programme has made significant, albeit somewhat slow, progress.
• The community-based component has not achieved such good results, with peer educators lacking support and few effective communication channels with young people at the community level.
• The programme's Behaviour Change Communication materials are very well designed and produced.
• Through the programme a major effort has been made to train officers and volunteers.
• The programmes monitoring and evaluation system is very good.
• Advocacy has been effectively used, and the programme has become instrumental in promoting policy changes.
• Multi-sector coordination, despite its importance to the programme's success, has not been very effective, and it is important to assess and strengthen the coordination capacity of each sector participating in the programme.
• The issue of sustainability constitutes a serious challenge to the programme.
