Increased wood fuel demand and deforestation contributes to both poverty and climatic change. TaTEDO is a NGO with more than 10 years experience from introducing improved energy technologies. Specific activities include the promotion of improved wood and charcoal stoves, improved charcoal processing and solar energy solutions affordable for the majority of Tanzanians. The Norwegian embassy has supported TaTEDO since the mid 1990s on specific programmes. The review should assess to what extent objectives have been achieved during 2003-06 and the sustainability of the impacts over time

Interesting Findings

  • Fuel wood represents 90-92% of Tanzania's annual energy balance while imported petroleum products represent 8%.
  • The deforestation is alarming at national level. Charcoal and firewood account for 75% of deforestation in the Coastal Zone, with charcoal representing the major portion.
  • The traditional 3-stone stove has a heat energy efficiency of less than 10% with 90% of the heat not usable for the intended purpose.
  • Improved wood stoves are 2,5 times as effective and reduce firewood consumption 50-80%, reducing also toxic and greenhouse gases.
  • Improved charcoal stoves reduce consumption between 50 and 60%.
  • Improved charcoal production kilns increase the conversion of wood to charcoal from 65 to and up to 100%.
  • Such improvements reduce fuel costs, daily collection of firewood and deforestation substantially.
  • The demand for TaTEDO services and products are higher than its capacity, creating quality challenges with the supply, including fabrication of poor quality stoves.
  • Scaling up TaTEDOs activities has potential for widespread impact.
  • Incomes from other sources than the donors are necessary.
  • Commercialising of services requires increased institutional competence and economic management
