The Norwegian Climate and Forest funding to civil society

Norad is entering into agreements with 39 organisations as part of Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI) for the period of 2021-2025.

NICFI 2021-2025: Call for proposals

Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI) launched a call for proposals for funding for civil society organisations for the grant period 2021-2025 in January 2020. The deadline was extended to May 19 due to Covid-19.

Civil society organisations were invited to present proposals for projects that contribute to NICFI’s strategic goal, which is that reversed and reduced loss of tropical forest contribute to a stable climate, protect biodiversity and enhance sustainable development.

Projects funded under this grant scheme address one or more of the five following categories:

  1. Indigenous peoples, local communities and environmental defenders
  2. Deforestation-free supply chains and financial markets
  3. Reduced forest crime and improved forest monitoring
  4. Mobilising ambition and support for forest friendly policies
  5. Groundbreaking ideas to reduce deforestation

Through its international Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI), the Norwegian government aims at supporting efforts to slow, halt and eventually reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD+).

Civil society is seen as important agent of change and central actor in furthering and applying REDD+. Norad manages the funding to civil society under NICFI.
